Title notes

  • Variations in title: This series was originally titled 'Aboriginal Gathering Place' when first described in 2021. This original title reflected the language present in the records and until December 2023 it was the official name of the space. In 2023 the Aboriginal Gathering Place was renamed to the Indigenous Gathering Place. The Douglas College Archives has redescribed the series title to reflect this renaming and to align with current language used at the College, as well as within the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Rather than deleting the original title altogether, it has been retained so as to preserve the original context of the records and legacy descriptions.

Administrative history

Established to provide services and support to Indigenous students at Douglas, the Douglas College First Nations Advisory Committee was made up of stakeholders from within the College community and beyond. A 1995 resource guide for Indigenous students included the following description of the committee:

“The Douglas College First Nations Advisory Committee meets regularly to work with Douglas College in developing and implementing community educational initiatives, programs and services. Membership is comprised of First Nations representatives from Qayqayt First Nation, Vancouver and New Westminster Education Centres, New Westminster Urban Cultural Society, New Westminster Senior Secondary School, Douglas College Faculty and Staff, Douglas College First Nations Alumni, Douglas College Student Society First Nations representative, and the New Westminster, Katzie and Coquitlam Bands. The Douglas College First Nations Advisory Committee works to support and guide the ‘Spirit’ for enhancing services for First Nations Learners at Douglas College.”

In the early 2000s, the committee’s name was changed to the Aboriginal Advisory Committee.

Scope and content

Series consists of materials pertaining to the Indigenous Gathering Place (known as the Aboriginal Gathering Place prior to 2023), which opened in April 2011 at the College's New Westminster campus. The Indigenous Gathering Place is a venue for hosting traditional ceremonies, potlucks, and meetings. When not holding events, it is a quiet space to study, meditate, and meet fellow students.

In addition to proposal documents and a program for the space's grand opening (January 2012), this series also includes some records related to services for Indigenous students in the 1990s.
